I've been commuting about 14 miles each way for a couple of months, and resisted going electric as I wanted the exercise, etc. - all the usual issues. After lusting after the Trek for several weeks, I rode one and was hooked. I can get to 25 MPH on the 2nd level of assist, which gives me enough range for two round trips on a charge. The light makes nighttime commuting a breeze and you never have to think about charging it. It's made my commute about 100x better and I actually looking forward to going to work. Separately, Tom @ Summit was great to deal with - knowledgable about the bike, helping in putting everything together and great service after the sale.
Been a cyclist forever and didn't know if I would enjoy pedaling a heavy e-bike around running errands and commuting. VERY happy with this bike. I'm 6'1" and went with the 55cm. I'll need to lower and lengthen the stem a bit but otherwise the slightly smaller frame size is a good fit for me. Normally a 58cm road bike. I swapped out the saddle and pedals and bought the Bontrager panniers that are pretty well thought out with internal compartment for laptop and a top pocket that holds the charger. I live on a steep hill and normally hit 45 MPH+ going down. Now shimmy or wiggles. The bike is stable at speed. Going up the same steep hill I select Turbo mode and can get home without breaking a sweat. One thing I've noticed is that I'm running into the 28 MPH limit on the flats when in Sport mode and once you hit 28 MPH the assist seems to shut off which is by design but took some getting used to in terms of keeping the assist on and the gearing correct. Speaking of gearing - at higher cadence the assist seems to be more efficient. Not sure if that's just me or actual. The integrated lights are nice but I add a Bonty flasher on the rear just to add some more visibility. Cars do pull out in front of you as they aren't used to judging a bike going 28MPH and closing that fast. My local Trek shop in La Mesa, CA suggested the bike and I'm glad they did. Super Fun should be the name.
This is my second Trek e-bike the first being a 7500 that's still running well five years later but the evolution of this Super Commuter+ 8s is leap forward in all the right ways. Trek's experience and e-bike lessons learned really pay off here and you can own this knowing there are no unwelcome surprises, experimental weirdness or poorly considered 'features' and it performs exactly as advertised. This bike is a joy to ride and after 25 or 30 miles I'm frequently passing my route home to ride more. I've owned numerous Trek 29ers and enjoyed years riding at JPL in Pasadena, trail, DH and technical but this bike just opens up entire roads and adventures I wouldn't get to otherwise. I'm 6'2" it has no problem going for many hours wherever I point it - in fact I haven't managed to drain the battery yet on a single ride. Outstanding machine and I gladly recommend it.
I have owned many high end bikes and even sponsored a cycling team in PA. This is a bike that is great on many levels. For those that have not tried an e-assist bike ... Think of wearing great sneakers that help you jump higher while playing basketball. That is the feeling!
